Fukushiman ydinvoimalaonnettomuudesta on vierähtänyt lähes vuosikymmen. Vaikka Japani heti onnettomuuden jälkeen pyrki luopumaan kokonaan ydinvoimasta, on ydinvoima palannut kiinteäksi osaksi maan hallituksen laatimaa energiastrategiaa. Tällä hetkellä tavoitteena on täyttää vähintään 20 % maan energiantarpeesta atomien voimalla vuoteen 2030 mennessä.
